In the land of Steorra many years ago there reigned a King of the House of the Red Rose, named Edmond for his father but known privately by his subjects as Edmond the Goat, for he possessed a most suspect quantity of children. Edmond's Queen was a fair Scot, Mary of Dublin, and long after his reign the histories reveal that Edmond the Goat had but a single child by her, the beautiful maiden Lukaina, who would become Queen at the side of the outcast Danacello Midicci. In her time, Lukaina became known much as her father before her, but her subjects had no need to invent a name for her. The whisperers of the land knew her instead by her name
